"первая леди"Супруга президента США [ President, U.S.], либо женщина, которую он определяет в качестве хозяйки Белого дома [ White House]. Так, например, при Т. Джефферсоне [ Jefferson, Thomas], который овдовел незадолго до его избрания президентом, роль хозяйки Белого дома исполняла жена государственного секретаря Дж. Мэдисона [ Madison, James] Долли Мэдисон [ Madison, Dolley Paine], вошедшая в историю США как одна из самых блестящих "первых леди", в особенности в то время, когда президентом стал ее муж. Выражение получило распространение в 1911 после постановки спектакля "Первая леди страны", посвященного Долли Мэдисон. Сравниться с ней через много лет смогла только жена президента Кеннеди Жаклин [ Onassis-Kennedy, Jacqueline (Bouvier)], при которой Белый дом стал символом элегантности и центром культуры.
